601-13 EXPLORING THE COMMUNITY WORKER ROLE

EXPLORING THE COMMUNITY WORKER ROLE

SUMMARY

For this analysis, community work strategies are simply modelled as a continuous range – a continuum, across three forms of practice. This resource (601-13) identifies aspects of each form to enable a worker or an agency to consider where their practice is located and to reflect on the nature of that practice in relation to purpose, principles, priorities, culture and style, and its effectiveness.

1. A range of community work approaches

Changes in strategy and approaches, moving the responsibility  and ownership from the worker – provider to the clients. Moving across the range of approaches requires planning to put in place appropriate conditions for success.

2. Positioning yourself as a worker:

  • Where are you on this community development work continuum?
  • Are you moving across the range – in which direction and why?

3. Your own capacity as a worker – your competence and confidence, and what might your training and development needs be?
