COMMUNITY STRATEGIES – THE LEARNING FOR WORKERS AND FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

THE BROAD LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. Building Skills for effective participation by local people in community work

  • Individuals are confident and able to make effective contributions and participate within community strategies – individual capacity-building.
  • Groups of individuals are able to effectively relate to each other and participate within community strategies – collective capacity building – contributing to community capacity-building.
  • Workers themselves are able as individuals and collectively to effectively contribute to and participate directly in bodies leading and implementing community strategies, for example – within working groups or forums.

2. Building skills to support effective participation by local people

  • Workers, individually and collectively are able to support and enable the individuals and groups they work with to contribute and participate effectively in community strategies
  • The responsible bodies and agencies, including working groups and forums are able to relate to, effectively connect with and encourage participation, by local people and workers, within community strategies.

There are at least two significant areas of learning for capacity-building:

  1. Building the desire, willingness and motivation to participate
  2. Equipping the people with the knowledge, understanding and skills to engage with any aspect of the community strategy.

Ensuring that  the learning is appropriate requires analyses of the nature of the community strategy, and the individual themes and actions within it, so that they are understood and can be responded to within any learning (curriculum) offer. Commonly the themes are identified at the community strategy level and the actions within the more detailed action or development plans.
