Community Learning Development Resource Category 401
CAPACITY BUILDING
SUMMARY
This category of resources is concerned with how community learning contributes to individual capacity building within neighbourhoods and communities. The nature of individual capacity and capacity building is explored and connections are made with how individual capacity building is evidenced and recognised. Contributions from individual capacity building to collective and community capacity building are also discussed.
Below is the guide to current resource files contained within Category 401 of the CLD resources, together with a summary of Learning Outcomes, which are supported by the resources.

Capacity building in community development
Modelling the strategy and processes, which put capacity building at the heart of community development and neighbourhood regeneration work. We also explore roles of workers and agencies within the learning focused model.
401 – 03 |
A ‘capacity coaching’ way of working
Capacity coaching as a way of working with non-confident individuals, to encourage and support them to build their own capacity, so that they become more able and empowered to choose and make changes in their lives. Very much a learner-centred way of working tailored to the needs, wants and readiness of each individual, with the worker interested in the individual’s learning journey and their understanding, valuing and application of their learning gains with pacing and sequencing individually determined.

404 – 04 |
The soft learning outcomes of capacity coaching
Holistic individual capacity building learning outcomes in reality. Capacity building – personal development of individuals, identified, together with feedback form individual learners about what they felt had helped them.
401 – 05 |
Learning as a complex of three processes
Using the three strand learning model to focus on holistic capacity building by the learner. The emphasis not being on what the learner is learning – the Learning Input Process, but how the learner feels about her/himself – the Learner Development Process.
401 – 06 |
Capacity building within community development training
Exploring community learning and capacity building as key concepts and areas of learning within any generic training and development programme for community development students and workers.
401 – 07 |
What is individual capacity?
A worksheet to prompt participants to contribute ideas about individual capacity and capacity building, within five areas of individual capacity.
401 – 08 |
Evidence of learning within capacity building?
What evidence and what are the sources – within individual, collective and community capacity building? Starting with evidence from the individual learner/client, before considering external sources.
401 – 09 |
Capacity building scenario
Capacity building in relation to public elections and the involvement and empowerment of the voter. A general election provides the framework for this analysis of the nature of capacity building.
401 – 10 |
Empowering individuals through personal development
Personal development learning journeys, which build individual capacity and enable people to move from feelings of powerlessness towards more powerful mind-sets are identified. This resource was generated from a practical workshop session of community learning workers. Examples of specific gains in capacity are tabulated.

401 – 11 |
Strands of learning with individual capacity building learning journeys
This resource models learning journeys taken by adult learners, building their individual capacity as learners and as individuals. Frameworks are provided for workers to explore: their role, how learning success can be assessed and the barriers and constraints that may need to be overcome.
401 – 12 |
Worker contributions to client learning journeys
What do workers and agencies contribute in the support of learners within capacity building learning journeys? What should the workers be doing and how should successful capacity building be evidenced?
401 – 13 |
Stages in accessing learning in capacity building
A structured analysis of the relationship between stages of engagement in capacity building work and behavioural changes in non-confident/ inexperienced adult learners.
401 – 14 |
Evidencing capacity building work outcomes
Capacity building is observable as changes in behaviour both individuals and collectively by groups. People building their capacity usually do so by steps over a period of time – their learning journey. This resource looks at evidencing learning gains and capacity building at various stages and also reviews the evidence trail aspects of evaluation methodology.
